X-Ray Diffraction

The Micro Imaging Lab contains a Thermo Scientific ARL X’TRA Companion X-Ray Diffractometer, this instrument is used for both qualitative and quantitative crystalline phase analysis of powdered samples. The XRD utilizes specific x-ray wavelengths generated from a copper (Cu) anode, which are directed at the sample at precise angles. The unique crystal lattice within the minerals diffract the x-rays in accordance with Bragg’s Law and are detected by the solid state detector, which then generates a diffractogram. Data can then be analyzed using software that compares sample spectra to comprehensive databases.
